The tuna fishing off the north coast has become reel popular with the salt water anglers.  The albacore tuna is a awesome fish to battle, they are so fast and strong.

The time of year is late summer. This is Mid Aug. and Sept. when the warm water is close to the shore. We keep close tabs on the water color and temp. for the best action.

ALBACORE NEWS #1-2008

Greetings to all for the first rendition of Albacore News for 2008, the sixth year of an interesting enterprise.
2008 should be an enjoyable year for Pacific Northwest tuna anglers.  If history of the last 80 years is a guide and conditions continue to be good for the next few weeks, 2008 should produce the best tuna fishery off the Oregon Coast and Western Vancouver Island in living memory.   Although I have not figured out this mystery, global cooling cycles tend to bring albacore tuna closer to shore in larger numbers than at any other time.  Since the current global cooling cycle began in 2000 (some argue it began in 1998, but local fish populations like humpies didn't begin responding until 2001), each summer has consistently brought better and better tuna fisheries nearer to our coast.   In 2007, an Oregon coastal group of tuna anglers even started a series of four tuna sportfishing derbies which were very successful.  There will be another four derbies on the Oregon Coast in 2008 between July and September.
Trends in ocean conditions are continuing to be good for bringing tuna consistently within ten miles of the Oregon Coast this year, and it is likely there are already a few to be found off the Central Oregon Coast near Reedsport.  The main migrations of tuna should begin arriving off bays like Tillamook and Depoe about June 8th for enterprising anglers if weather permits.
If you are thinking about an albacore trip this summer, now would be a good time to make your plans.  Conventional wisdom says that late summer and early fall are the best for Northwest tuna.  This is not so.    The peak period when I have reported tuna to be the closest each of the last six years of the “Albacore News” has been from July 4th through early August, not September (although that month has been good).
